GAF Timberline HDZ vs Owens Corning Duration in Florida

By One World Roofing · March 5, 2026 · Updated July 19, 2026

GAF Timberline HDZ or Owens Corning Duration — which is better in Florida?

For most Central Florida homes, GAF Timberline HDZ has the edge, and the reason is algae. GAF’s StainGuard Plus algae warranty runs 25 years against 10 on Owens Corning Duration, and in Florida humidity algae is the thing that ages a roof’s appearance long before the shingle fails. On wind performance, installation quality, and price the two are close enough that the installer matters more than the brand.

Both are excellent shingles. Neither is a mistake. The differences are narrower than either manufacturer’s marketing suggests.

How do the two compare?

Warranty terms change, so confirm current coverage at the point of quote. Our roofing pricing page and Central Florida cost guide show where shingle sits against tile and metal.

Why does algae resistance matter so much in Florida?

Because it is the difference you will actually see. Those black and brown streaks running down a roof are Gloeocapsa magma, a cyanobacteria that thrives in heat and humidity. On untreated shingles in Central Florida it typically shows within three to five years.

It does not shorten the life of the roof. It makes a seven-year-old roof look twenty, which matters for kerb appeal, HOA compliance, and resale. Both manufacturers embed copper granules to inhibit it; GAF simply warrants theirs for far longer.

If you are staying in the house, that 15-year warranty gap is the single most meaningful difference between these two products.

What is the difference between LayerLock and SureNail?

Both address the same problem — making sure nails land where they should.

GAF’s StrikeZone is a widened nailing area that is far more forgiving of a nail placed slightly high or low. GAF cites very high placement accuracy on it.

Owens Corning’s SureNail is a reinforced fabric strip through the nailing zone, giving the fastener something tougher to grip.

Different approaches, similar goal, and honestly the difference between them is smaller than the difference between a careful crew and a rushed one. A nail driven at the wrong angle voids the wind rating regardless of which shingle is under it — which is why we ask who is physically on your roof is worth asking any contractor.

Will either survive a hurricane?

Both carry wind ratings up to 130 mph, but only with enhanced installation — six nails per shingle rather than four, plus the manufacturer’s starter strip at eaves and rakes. Fitted to the standard four-nail pattern, neither reaches its headline rating.

Ask specifically whether your quote includes six-nail installation and the matching starter strip. If a contractor cannot answer, the wind rating on the brochure is not the wind rating on your house.

Underlayment matters at least as much. In high-velocity wind zones Florida requires specific underlayment, and it is the layer that keeps water out once shingles are gone. See our shingle roofing page for how we specify a full system.

Which warranty is better?

Both manufacturers reserve their strongest coverage for certified contractors: GAF’s Golden Pledge and Owens Corning’s Platinum Protection. Both extend beyond materials to cover workmanship, which is the part that actually fails.

Neither is available through an uncertified installer at any price. That alone is a reason to check certification before you compare quotes — two estimates for the same shingle can carry completely different warranty outcomes.

One World Roofing is certified by both manufacturers, so either enhanced programme is available on your installation. See our manufacturer certifications, or read more on our GAF and Owens Corning pages.

Is one cheaper than the other?

Not meaningfully. Both land in the $9,000 to $16,000 range installed on a typical 1,800 sq ft Central Florida home, and the spread between contractors on the same shingle is wider than the spread between the two shingles.

If a quote on one is dramatically cheaper than a quote on the other, the difference is in the scope, not the material. Check tear-off, underlayment specification, nail count, and decking allowance before you compare the headline number.

So which should you pick?

  • GAF Timberline HDZ if you are staying in the house long term and want the roof to still look new in year ten. The 25-year algae warranty is the real advantage.
  • Owens Corning Duration if the colour range suits your home better, or your preferred contractor is Platinum certified but not GAF certified. SureNail is proven and the shingle performs.

Either way, prioritise the installer over the brand. A GAF roof fitted badly will fail before an Owens Corning roof fitted properly, and neither warranty covers workmanship unless the installer is certified.
